Citation Management Software

Presentation of EndNote and Zotero, two widely used citation managers

From Swisscovery

  • To add one reference from Swisscovery to Endnote, click on the 3 dots on the right and select the  "Export RIS" option. You will get a file called Primo_RIS_Export.ris ready to download. Select the option "Open with", not "Save", and select Endnote in the drop-down menu. Do not forget to check if the reference is fine and correct it if necessary.
  • To import several references at one time, add the references you wish to import to the "my favorites" folder ( ), go to the "My favorites" folder, select the documents you wish to add to your Endnote library and follow the same procedure (click on the 3 dots and choose the "Export RIS" option).
  • The Endnote option in the Swisscovery "more actions" menu allows to download directly a reference to Endnote Online, not to the desktop version of Endnote (but both versions should normally be synchronized).

Manually

It is sometimes not possible to download automatically a reference; for instance, if you wish to have the reference of a book section, a legal case, an unpublished document... In this case, the reference must be entered manually.

Select "New Reference" in the menu "References", choose the right reference type (book, edited book, article, case...).

When you enter manually a reference, it is essential to follow certain rules:

  • Author field: one author on each line, last name first, then the first name, with a comma between. If the document has more than 3 authors, you must enter all of them. EndNote will add the mention « et al. » if the chosen style requires it.
  • If the author is an institution, enter the name and add a comma at the end. Make sure however that there is no comma inside the name.
  • Title field: capitalise the right letters, do not add any final period. The same for journal titles.
  • Volume and issue fields: enter just the number (for instance 11, not no 11).
  • Access Date and Last Modified Date fields: this information does not appear in the bibliographies. This field allows you to sort your references and to conduct searches by input dates. Enter the dates following the year/month/day format.
  • Keywords field: does not appear in the bibliography. Useful to sort and assemble references by theme. Enter the keywords on separate lines, or with slashes (/ or \) or a semi-colon (;).

How to Modify References Types?

Menu Edit -> Preferences -> References Types.

Click on "Modify Reference Types". Choose in the drop-down list the reference type you would like to modify, change the names of the fields, and click on OK to save.

It is also possible to create new reference types using the 3 unused reference types available.
