Introduction

The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established by the Charter of the United Nations in June 1945 and began its work in April 1946. The seat of the Court is the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Its role is to settle legal disputes brought before it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised organs and specialised agenciesof the United Nations.
